In today’s digital world information exchange is been held electronically. So there arises a need for the secure transmission of the information. Along with security there are several other factors such as cost, errors transmission transfer speed, plays a vital role in the transmission of information. Image compression is a technique which is used for the intact and efficient transfer of data by not only reducing the size of graphic file to be transferred but also reduces the storage space requirements This paper provides a basic introduction about image compression, image coder, various types of image compression techniques and lastly the benefits related with the image compression techniques. This paper addresses the area of image compression as it is applicable to various fields of image processing.
