Abstract :
An investigative study of lateritic soil treated with up to 16% cement kiln dust (an industrial waste) by dry weight of soil was carried out at stepped percentages of 4%. The untreated lateritic soil was classified as A – 7 – 6 or CL in the AASHTO and Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), respectively. 0 and 4% cement kiln dust (CKD) recorded results that failed to attain the minimum specified values for load bearing walls but they met the requirements for non load bearing walls by attaining a minimum compressive strength value of 2.5kN/m2. 8, 12 and 16% cement kiln dust treated lateritic soils recorded results that were satisfactory as load bearing walls as they all attained the minimum compressive crushing strength of 3.5kN/m2. This will result in considerable savings in cost of producing load bearing lateritic bricks; since cement kiln dust which is cheaper can be used instead of using Ordinary Portland cement whose cost is becoming increasingly prohibitive. The minimum recommended input value of cement kiln dust for producing load bearing lateritic bricks is 8% CKD content. The use of CKD will go a long way in bringing down the cost of multi-storey buildings in rural areas of developing countries.
